Spring is fast approaching and some of us have even been blessed with a few milder days over the past few weeks. It’s time to start embracing the (slightly) warmer weather, in preparation for the (even more slightly) warmer summer weather.
Did you know that the changing seasons can have a positive effect on your physical and mental health?
Waking up when it’s dark and finishing work in the dark can have a detrimental effect on our health. The darker days cause us to feel lethargic and means we’re less likely to get out and exercise.
Open your curtains first thing in the morning and let the sunshine in. Sunshine early in the morning releases serotonin which can help you stay alert for the whole day. The brighter, longer days means that the sleepy hormone, melatonin, stays away a little longer, helping us feel more energetic for more of the day.
Wintery weather and central heating can cause your skin to dry out, while wrapping up in scarfs and hats can block your pores and cause spots or blemishes. Before the weather gets too warm, now is a good time to get out and enjoy the fresh air. But remember, the sun doesn’t always have to be hot to cause skin damage, so protect your skin with the correct level of SPF, even on cooler days.
Breath in the fresh air
Now that the weather is warmer, you can enjoy being outside, rather than running from building to car and car to building to avoid the wintery gusts. A 2014 study published in the journal of Environmental Psychology found a link between an appreciation of nature and a good mood, and a separate study found that breathing in fresh air can also help put you in a positive frame of mind. Simply being outside can make you feel better.
Longer days, more time for exercise
Longer daylight hours make it easier to fit in outdoor exercise. Whether you enjoy a long run along the sea front or a casual walk through a park, the milder weather makes both a much more enjoyable experience.
Give yourself a vitamin boost
The sun is the biggest natural source of Vitamin D, however it only provides enough vitamin D from March to September (Spring and Summer). Being outdoors for an hour each day will give you enough vitamin D to help keep your bones healthy and strong. Vitamin D is an important vitamin as it helps your body absorb calcium, which is needed for strong bones. Vitamin D can still be absorbed through sun protection, so ensure you are wearing the right levels of sunscreen to protect you from sunburn.
Change your diet
Spring is a great time to do an overhaul on your diet. The changing season brings plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, which can be bought fresh from your local shops, ensuring you are getting them at their freshest, preserving all the vitamins and minerals.
Daylight saving time starts on Sunday 10th March and a few weeks after that Spring 2019 officially starts on Wednesday 20th March. We’ve only got to withstand a few more weeks of winter, with dark mornings and evenings, and then we can jump into spring with all the enthusiasm of a daffodil.
